Dolly Fridays 3: The 5th W Club doll is... another Poppy Parker!

We knew that the final Dolly Friday offering was the fifth and final W Club Exclusive doll. Everyone was expecting a Fashion Royalty or NuFace character, since the first line especially has been mostly absent this year (bar a few dolls in side projects like the witches or Magia 2000). Imagine everyone’s surprise when the email arriving from the W Club and Integrity Toys unveiled another Poppy Parker doll. The catch supposedly is that she's the first ever Poppy Parker doll designed by Jessy Ayala, who usually designs Fashion Royalty and NU Face dolls. I’m guessing this is because David Buttry, who is the Poppy Parker designer par excellence, did the NU Face club doll a few months back? The thing is, no matter who did what, did we really need another Poppy in a year that had a full collection of that line properly presented, plus two club dolls and a smattering of online event releases as well?

Jessy has done a great job with this Poppy. The outfit is kind of between the proper Poppy era and something that you could find in a fashion collection these days, treading a fine balance. I like the choice of materials and colours. Also it is nice that she comes with both sets of feet and two pairs of shoes - one of them again the Valentino style platform pumps with the ankle strap. The monogrammed bag is awesome as well. I could do without the velvet hair band - it is usually something older women than Poppy wear and personally it reminds me of an awful Greek politician lady, who has made it her trademark. The doll herself looks beautiful and fresh - giving me lots of Gigi Hadid vibes. She has the Bergdorf screening but with the strong eyebrow colour that we saw in the Jason Wu Poppy dolls a while ago. I have not ordered any of the previous four club dolls this year (a first for me), but I just might get this one. I have a week to mull it over.

Dolly Fridays 2: The TRUE™ Collection is unveiled - Industry reborn!

The 2nd Dolly Friday W Club presentation was about a full collection, the second one revealed this club year (after Poppy Parker’s Palm Springs), which could be a sign of things returning to a more regular pace after the disruptions experienced beginning in 2020. There were six dolls unveiled in total, from the brand new TRUE Collection, all created by IT designers David Buttry and Mark Tinkey. The line is a rebranding of Industry, with a bit of Dynamite Girls pizzaz thrown in. Two dolls are IT Direct lottery items, while the rest are available through official IT dealers. I like what David and Mark are doing here - the collection is cohesive and has a definite point of view, combining the various inspirations and influences in a strong and relatable manner. Some dolls tend to look cartoony, edging closer to Dynamite Girls than Industry, but that was to be expected. Let’s hope this iteration stays and does not need another revamp to sell.

We first saw Hollis in Style Lab and she was a popular sculpt, so here she is again as a TRUE character. She has a lovely face and nice make up, but the hair is very play-line. Her outfit is a mix and match of many disparate things that kind of work. Nice to see a different shape for sunglasses. She looks the most adult of the bunch. Hollis, like all the other female dolls of the collection, comes with two pair of feet, high heeled and articulated flat feet, even though they have only one pair of shoes.

This is the first time that Tulabelle appears in a darker skin tone, at least in this sculpt version. I still cannot bring myself to like this sculpt - even though her resemblance to Ginger is stronger. The styling is very Gucci by Alessandro Michele and also has some Twiggy vibes. Awesome combination of colours throughout - and I love the miniature corduroy fabric. The boots are for the articulated flat feet she comes with, but of course one can use the high heeled feet to let her wear other styles.

Probably one of the best versions of this sculpt, Liu Liu looks fantastic here - especially her colourful outfit. It consists of various items that work well together but also will work great in other outfits. I love the quirky hat (fox pin included) - it transforms the whole ensemble. The shoes and earrings are also great accessories and will be easily worked in other outfits. Love the printed bag too - David said it is a custom print, as pretty much all of the prints of this collection. Her face is a bit cartoony with this screening, reminding me a lot of Mulan dolls, but that might also be part of her appeal.

Tate is usually the most popular doll in any collection he’s part of, and this one is no exception. He has a fully flocked head here and it is his first with a darker skin tone- each of his previous iterations had pale skin. His outfit is awesome - the plaid shirt looks a lot like the famous Alicia Silverstone Clueless outfit (and Salvador Arriaga staple) and matches with a gorgeous teddy bear backpack! Awesomeness! Furry bucket hat, multicoloured sneakers, necklace, glasses and watch complete the layered look. The whole look has value for money and I wonder why we cannot have this combination of price/clothing items + accessories in other lines. I’m happy that I managed to be confirmed for him.

Contrary to many collectors, I never liked Jasper. I find the sculpt not only cartoony but also weird looking. This version does not change that. She does have a gorgeous outfit though: a fantastic hooded anorak (that I would wear myself), a beautiful bubble hemmed dress over a printed aqua t-shirt, platform gladiator boots and great jewellery (including a scull ring). I hope to be able to find that anorak at one point.

Auden was always one of the first dolls to sell out whenever Dynamite Girls dolls were unveiled. He returns here as an homage to the Warhol superstar actor Joe D’Alessandro, a very handsome guy that was part of the Warhol inner circle back in the late 60s and early 70s. He does indeed look like him in his prime, and the outfit channels early 70s hippie style transformed into modern dressing fare. For me, he was an instant reminder of a childhood comic figure, Blek Le Roc, an American hunter from the revolutionary era. I already have two gorgeous blonde Audens, so will skip this lottery. His sweater’s back is cyan (due to having an opening to facilitate his dressing). Love both the corduroy jacket (the scale is awesome) and the distressed effect on the pants.

Dolly Fridays 1: The 4th W Club doll for 2022 is Metropolitan Adventurer Tajinder Chowdhury

To start 2023 in a nice way, Integrity Toys replaced Dolly Days (a week of various online doll offerings) with Dolly Fridays: each Friday for the three remaining weeks of January, W Club members will be receiving offerings from the company. The 4th W Club Exclusive of the 2022 membership year was the first doll unveiled on Friday the 13th no less! Designer Vaughn Sawyers was inspired by a metropolitan adventure to come up with a new version of Tajinder "Taj" Chowdhury. The doll was presented in an email, with the Indian character getting whitewashed as a blonde, light-skinned guy (Hungarian was the original script for his skin tone), while in a subsequent email, we were informed that he will be actually made with the Sunkissed tone. Everything will need to be just right and the team knows that Taj is not only the hottest leading man in front of the camera, but his unique perspective and keen eye are truly an asset behind the camera as well and his input is always welcome!

How can an experienced, professional, long lived company release proper, styled, well produced photos of a doll’s final prototype and unveil it to the public, then release a hushed, head-on-a-pole photo of said doll in a different coloured skin tone? What the heck happened? Was it a knee-jerk reaction to online comments about whitewashing an Indian character? Some would say it is not the first time we see POC characters appearing in a different skin tone, even lighter or downright pale. I would reply yes we have, but it is the norm that this happens after they establish said characters and have them some years around, not in their very second appearance ever.

The fact is that the prototype photos do make Tajinder look more like Callum, the character that first appeared in this sculpt, a Caucasian character. Indian people do have many different skin tones of course. But this whole situation is kind of weird. It does not help that apart from that, the doll is not something extraordinary. If you check older male Integrity Toys dolls, you will see many iterations of this particular style (suit, long hair, sunglasses, man bag, great shoes, watch etc) and in similar colours (but grey shoes? Really? Yuck). So if it is the first time you are getting such a doll, it is a perfectly stylish buy (although those external pockets add a lot of bulk to the silhouette). For the rest of us, it is a pass. Which makes the W Club dolls I am passing this year three!

Stay Tuned Day 5: the Integrity Toys 2022 online event ends with a premiere and Jason Wu

The last day of the “Stay Tuned” online event had three dolls revealed: Integrity Toys made it look like the gala dinner of a normal convention, so we saw not one but two Jason Wu dolls. And there was also one NU Face doll, but instead of Jessy Ayala (who was noticeably absent throughout the event week), it was designed by David Buttry and Mark Tinkey

Despite the three dolls, we had only one series as inspiration: Sex And The City. The story goes that Lukas produced a new TV series named "Girl In The City", and we were also treated with clips from ITFTV: Integrity Toys Fashion TV, something like EW TV red carpet coverage. Giselle was the star of the new series, channelling Sarah Jessica Parker, while Aymeline, in a double appearance wearing two different Jason Wu looks, was on the premiere red carpet to support her.

Watch out fashion lovers, real-life fashion designer Giselle Diefendorf is ready to add "actress" to her resume as she stars in "Girl In The City", a modern re-invention of popular romantic comedies from the early 2000s! It follows her very fashionable adventures in the city that never sleeps, as she tries to juggle her fabulous career as a top fashion critic and her complicated relationship with a fashion designer that she frequently needs to critique, oh and of course, her never-ending love affair with her lover's main fashion brand competitor- Manero! In the pilot episode simply titled "Hello Lover", you will fall in love with Giselle in the main role, just like we did!

So if this was a convention, one of the Aymeline ladies would have been the convention doll, the other the centrepiece and Giselle would have been one of the W Club event dolls - probably the souvenir one. She tries to emulate the famous Dior by John Galliano newspaper print dress that Carrie was wearing in Sex And The City but the dress has quite a different structure and the shoes look more like cheap Manolo knockoffs than the real thing (MANERO for Manolo, lol - btw Tony Manero is the name of the character John Travolta plays in Saturday Night Fever and Stayin’ Alive). Since I have seen better made shoe buckles from Integrity (and weirdly enough there is an example on the very next doll), that would look more like the ones on the original Manolos, it puzzles me as to why this choice was made - maybe lack of resources in the factory? They look bad. The doll is beautiful, with the trademark SJP hair in abundance - and it is the second Giselle we get this year.

Can anyone tell me why Aymeline has the original Hangisi Manolos while Giselle was left with a knockoff? LOL, cannot wait to see the two of them in a catfight for the pumps! A beautiful Aymeline, with red hair, that reminds me a bit of Androgyny Avantguard doll. The dress is not actually in his 2021 Fall collection but looks like a cross between a gown from that collection with an OOAK gown he made for Kristin Davis for the And Just Like That premiere (fits with this occasion perfectly, right?). She’s a catch - the price is the same as her previous incarnations and she has it all.

Even though the doll is named Jason Wu Collection Spring 2020, there is no such dress in that collection apart from a similar but quite different finale gown. W Club confirmed that Jason said this is the same 2012 gown worn by the first Net-A-Porter 10th anniversary exclusive doll (in chartreuse) back in 2017. I guess since they already had the pattern, they decided it looks close enough to name it 2020. The gorgeous doll reminds me a lot of the ITBE Higher doll, but (unfortunately) in a lighter skin tone. She would have looked so much better in light honey or latino. She compliments the red head perfectly, plus they will make an awesome trio with my NAP Midnight Garden blonde Aymeline.

Stay Tuned Day 4: Poppy Parker does Mary Tyler Moore - Miss Independence

The penultimate day of the Integrity Toys online event “Stay tuned (replacing the convention for 2022) brought W Club members another lottery opportunity for a doll. Again the doll is Poppy Parker, the third of this event if you count the one offered during the event announcement back in August. Did we need one more Poppy? So here is Miss Independence: a cute Poppy, a Marlo Thomas lookalike - which is good. She does have a look that harks back to the early Poppy dolls, both because of her overall styling and her outfit. Pity that she also reminds me a lot of Pretty Bird Poppy. If she had the blue and red suit Marlo Thomas is wearing in the series opening credits, she’d be more desirable. And the hat is an old staple of Poppy, I must have at least five or six in various colours. Painted hands instead of the glove hand sculpt? High heeled extra pair of feet without shoes to match? Her screening is almost the same with Sparkling Sunset. Cute but not gorgeous, for me at least.
