The fifth and final W Club doll revealed for 2018

The late start of the 2018 W Club year meant that we got the W Club doll releases crammed into the six last months of it. Hopefully the next year will be a bit more streamlined. This meant that members of the club got the notification for their last W Club offering in late January. The fifth and final Club doll is Eugenia, missing from the main collection so far, which should be welcome news to everyone. Jessy Ayala designed this doll, with only accessories and small details connecting her to Sacred Lotus and the Luxe Life Convention Collection.

A very beautiful doll to end the year. She’s not groundbreaking or different from older releases, but she’s a lovely doll with gorgeous clothes and lots of accessories, justifying the price tag. Even though generally I preferred the earthy and dark tones of Sacred Lotus dolls versus the eighties pink/blue ones of Luxe Life, in this case I would have gone for the latter.

IMG_7895.PNG

Another peeve: black gown. We’ve had big black gowns in the past (even though I own none of them). The fashion runways are filled with bright or pastel coloured big frilly gowns - check out the recent couture shows for Spring 2019. Why black? Just think how much better this would look in blue, fuchsia, yellow or green. Or even a lightweight print muslin. And enough with the tan trench coat! Give us one in an unexpected colour, like white, lilac, pink or lemon! Or olive green!

IMG_7896.PNG

It’s the kind of choices and details that distinguish a properly trained and educated experienced designer from a talented but still-findin-my-way-one. Merely copying runway looks does not help in forwarding your work by itself. Studying and researching needs to be constant and thorough. Even if, accidentally, you score the summer garden thread of the Couture collections now held in Paris. And yes, I did preorder the doll. She’s a keeper. But she could have been a holy grail.

The 2016 Integrity Toys Convention: Supermodels part II - The Convention collection

On the first official day of the convention, i.e. today, the convention collection is presented to the attendees and the sales room opens for them. One can see that the Supermodel theme is running strong, and we keep guessing which models are represented by which dolls. Some of the outfits are really iconic, at least to those who lived fashion in the late 80s and early 90s. Versace has the lion's share, with Chanel a close second. Adele, Vanessa, Vero and Eugenia also have a second dress, from an Avedon shot Versace campaign.

Pity they have boots instead of the pumps and socks shown in the original. The dresses look yummy though.

From the blonde highlights on brunette, I'm guessing Cindy Crawford.

The dress is Chanel Haute Couture Autumn/Winter 1990, as seen in the photo below taken by Lagerfeld for the house's campaign. Linda was wearing it on the runway as well.

She even has the mole. I want that dress.

Naomi of course. And that gown looks like it's Thierry Mugler from his Haute Couture Autumn /Winter 1992 collection, worn on the runway by Christy Turlington.

One of the most iconic Chanel Haute Couture gowns, from the Autumn/Winter 1990 collection as well, worn on the runway and in an equally iconic Irving Penn photoshoot for US Vogue, by Christy Turlington.

Pity they did not make the magnificent boots that went with these gowns, they are the sole reason they look extraordinary and not like another overblown couture gown. They also missed the gorgeous embroidered bows on the arms. I want the dress if only to try and complete the look.

Enough about the dress, who is Vanessa channeling? She does look like la Linda below:

But Linda never had her hair that long in this phase of her career and especially as a blonde. My guess is 50-50 between Claudia Shiffer and Nadja Auermann.

I'm fairly sure she's supposed to be Linda Evangelista. Eugenia's sculpt is a dead ringer for Linda and that hair colour was Linda's for a couple of her reincarnations, both in short (the best) and medium length hair. I wish they were not afraid to go shorter on these dolls,

The dress is of course the iconic safety pin Versace gown that made headlines for one then unknown Liz Harley. It was worn on the runway by Helena Christensen, while a more daring version was worn by Christy Turlington, both below.

So, what do you think? Who is who? How are you liking the Supermodel theme so far? More dolls in the following posts!

Reigning Grace Eugenia: the Grace Kelly tribute from Integrity

Back in April, Integrity Toys announced that all W Club members. whether going to the convention or not, would have the chance to buy a special Cinematic convention doll. The doll was Reigning Grace, had the face of Eugenia and would wear a lovely pleated black dress, which we discovered was the one Grace Kelly was wearing in Rear Window. Now the promo photos arrived, with the doll soon to be shipping to members. I must say she has surpassed my expectations and I am surely glad to have pre-ordered her. The dress looks fantastic and very faithful to the original. The doll is gorgeous, her screening the same as Diamond Society (with different shades of course), I just wish her hairdo was more close to the classic glamour bob Grace Kelly had than this Victoire chignon. She is lacking a bit in accessories, but the film outfit does not have anything more than this either, apart from a hat. Stunning.

The Winning Doll of the 2014 Integrity Toys convention design competition: As Dusk Falls

In October 2014, the Official Integrity Toys Advanced Design competition took place at the "GLOSS" Convention in Orlando, Florida. As last year, with previous winning design doll Edge Vanessa, the W Club is introducing a doll based on Ms. Julia Leroy's winning entry, "As Dusk Falls" Eugenia Perrin Frost™. As per the rules of the competition, the winning design, personally picked by Jason Wu and other members of the Integrity Toys design team, has gone through various adjustments to make it production ready while preserving the spirit of Julia's original design. I really like the doll and would try to get her if the timing was better.

Julia Leroy started her career in 2003 as a graphic/product designer, but became interested in fashion photography after moving to the US. A few years later, she delved into several professional hobbies. One of them was sewing high-end doll fashions and photographing them in miniature dioramas. The world of modern doll collecting was revealed to Julia in 2007, when she bought her first "Adele Brilliance" Fashion Royalty doll. Julia holds a master degree in design from Academy of Architecture and Art; beyond her education and experience, she is largely self-taught.

Julia Leroy

"I was dreaming about beautiful real model looking dolls since I was a kid, but the smallest doll I had back in 1988 was a 14 inches "Cinderella" doll and of course, it had nothing to do with modern fashion dolls. I remember making a "bra" with two pom-poms and a stretchy band to make her look like a Disney "Cinderella" and was hiding it that my parents wouldn't notice the "improvement" I created. I never could imagine that 20 years later, I will discover Fashion Royalty dolls.

The original competition winner

The 2014 Gloss convention was my first Integrity Toys convention and I was entering the very first time for a doll design competition. Since I had some experience in creating doll clothes, I knew I had chances to win but I would never think it actually could happen. That was an amazing feeling to receive such honor by winning in both categories, it's like falling in love for the first time - doesn't matter what your future holds, but you will always remember the first one." - Julia Leroy

What Julia Says About Her Creation:

"I love vintage era fashions and I think many fashion designers are looking to be inspired by it. The competition theme was perfect for me, but I wanted to combine a classic vintage dress with modern edgy elements that even the future Fashion Royalty doll released 30 years from now could easily wear. I chose to reconstruct a vintage looking bodice for my dress and combine it with the today's most popular red carpet "mermaid style" skirt. To make it look effortless and modern, I covered parts of the dress with mesh inserts. I called it "As Dusk Falls" because I imagined my character as a "mysterious lady" - like that old time story about "Cinderella" - when she appears from almost twilight air and everybody looks at her mesmerized by her beauty."

Integrity Toys May 2015 release part 4: Fashion Royalty collection

The last line presented by Integrity Toys was none other than the battleship of the company, the Fashion Royalty line. This year Jason Wu wanted the design team to start with the ladies who lunch as an inspiration: the rich socialites of the 60s that met in the famous restaurants of the era and were very elegantly and minimally dressed during the day but went all out flamboyant at night. The collection comes out along those lines, with elegant and minimal day-wear, very chic and with a retro whiff, that also includes some more eccentric evening wear. Apart from characters picked from the core 8, the line up has Isha and Tatyana. Isha has not been in a normal collection for ages (since 2011 if I remember correctly) and Tatyana was last seen being part of the final FR2 collection. I liked this line so much I ended up pre-ordering five of the dolls.Let's see the dolls:

The only Isha I have in my collection is Something Cool from 2005. I was always on the look out for one but she was elusive or I was getting other, more coveted dolls and could not add her to the bunch. Now she comes home. She looks fantastic, very elegant and the dress is very detailed and looks so well executed. Her bag is also fantastic.  Isha comes dressed in a dark navy and cream sheath dress with black shirt collar detail, nude satin with black chiffon overlay inserts on the bodice and side seam pockets, cinched at the waist by a miniature designer belt. She completes her look with a cream coloured bag, black pumps, black painted gloves and earrings (an additional pair of flesh coloured hands is also included). Isha is 12.5-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with fully rooted hair and hand applied eyelashes.A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

A minimal looking Natalia - that's a first! I love the bolero. Remember the hat from the upgrade W Club Agnes? I passed on this one as I already have a latina skin toned Natalia with brown hair. She wears a sophisticated tweed cocoon sleeve crop jacket and pencil skirt combo with grey faux leather waistband. She completes her look with a grey and white checker crew neck bodysuit, topped off by a taupe straw cloche style hat and fuchsia faux leather purse and pumps. Includes silver disk earrings and a ring. Natalia Fatalé is a 12.5-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes.  A doll stand is included. Although she is one beautiful Eugenia, I passed on this one as I already have a coral pink suit from the Truly Madly Deeply Agnes gift set and a red haired pony tailed Eugenia from the Première convention collection. Love the intricate ponytail wrap and her bag and shoes. These are the upgrade Agnes earrings too, the trademark of this collection. Eugenia is in a coral linen look suit with demi sleeve jacket and a chequered mock neck bodysuit. She completes her look with a maple rose straw cloche style hat, light caramel strappy pumps, and a cream leather and beige 'suede' hand bag. Includes large silver dangle earrings.  This is a winner - it seems that the success of the Edge Vanessa informs the look of this doll too - but in a totally different outfit. The mole reminds me of Cindy Crawford. Great outfit but I do not get the $10 price difference from the previous dolls - is it the coat? If so, why then is Shades of Grey Hanne at the same price level with the other dolls of her line? Vanessa wears a black and white belted glen check coat and a tone on tone glen check fitted skirt with black faux leather waistband and an anthracite demi sleeve satin shirt. She accessorizes her look with a light blue 'suede' handbag and black 'suede' strappy sandals. Also included are large frame sunglasses, earrings, and a bracelet. I was certain that Elise in this collection would be a red head. With the exception of the limited Montaigne Market, it has been a while since we had one and IT delivered. I really like her - both doll and outfit are gorgeous. The cut of the dress looks like the one Splendid Jordan was wearing a few years back. The bag looks like a Hermes Kelly miniature. Her lipstick shade might be a bit problematic with that red hair but we will see when she comes home. Again this one is $10 more expensive than the rest of the line. Elise is in a camel shawl neckline cocoon coat, black leather designer belt and printed cotton/spandex sheath dress. She accessorizes her look with a cream 'leather' bag, black pumps, caramel painted glove hands, gold earrings, a broach and a bracelet. Elise Jolie is a 12.5-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.

Blond Kyoris are either gorgeous or totally indifferent to me. This one falls in the first category. i love the doll and the dress and her accessories are good too. Vaughn said that they search a lot to find the perfect fabric for the bag. She wears a plunging V neck sequinned dress that has a sateen modified wrap skirt with a faux belted detail. It includes large frame sunglasses, a black oversize clutch purse, earrings and faux patent leather strappy sandals. Did anyone scream Lupita when they saw her? She's totally inspired from the famous first Oscar red carpet appearance of actress Lupita Nyong'o in 2014 and is, for me, the second best incarnation of the Adele 3.0 sculpt (after Main Attitude in 2012). Ms. Makéda models a light blue gown composed of a satin bodice with asymmetrical waistline and a full tulle skirt in 3 shades of blue. Includes earrings, bracelet, ring, silver clutch and silver sandals. Adèle Makéda is a fully articulated 12.5-inch fashion doll with rooted  curly hair on top of the head and flocked hair on the sides and back and hand applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. This will be my second Tatyana doll - she's absolutely amazing. Totally different than her previous incarnations, looking like a cross between Elise and Dasha. Love her colouring and her dress is fantastic - if the production doll has the same draping it will be great. She could have had a more elaborate hair do though, I am getting bored with all the ponytails, especially in evening dressed dolls. Tatyana is in a navy blue faille gown with "caviar" beading detail on the bodice. She adds some edge to her look by wearing a dotted tulle veil, dotted lace gloves and black strappy pumps. Includes earrings, bracelet and a ring. Tatyana Alexandrova is a 12.5-inch fully articulated vinyl fashion doll with rooted hair and hand-applied eyelashes. A doll stand is included. For adult collectors ages 15 and up.
