Integrity Toys Legendary 2020 Convention day 3: The Jason Wu Gala and convention doll

And we finally reached the finale of the convention, which is the Saturday night gala, with Jason Wu as a special guest. Jason appeared on our screens and had a nice talk with Carol, reminiscing about how he started with doll design and Integrity Toys and it was so nice to see how he’s still passionate about the dolls, despite having a big real fashion house of his own now. One titbit we got from Jason was that Adele’s original sculpt was based on Erykah Badu, way before Fashion Royalty debuted. He also gave us information on a new doll but we have it under wraps for a few days more. The winners of the design competition were revealed: photography (Lester Javier), styling (Ramiro Rivas) and diorama (Lani Billitti). And, closing the convention in a fantastic way, here are the two gala dolls - the centerpiece and the convention doll, which, surprisingly, is not either Elyse or Agnes (btw, the Agnes you saw on my first post for the convention will be the 25th Anniversary Doll and will be released later this year).

Integrity Toys sent a notice about the doll’s dress colour:

Important note: We noticed that during the presentation this evening, Alain commented that Dania's dress was blue; however, we checked with the design team and it is really more of a deep royal *purple*. Depending on your monitor/device calibration, this color might read differently, but in person, it is a deep purple tone. We wanted to alert you to avoid any confusion vis-à-vis what was said on our "virtual stage".

Dania looks gorgeous here, in a Sofia Vergara kind of way. The original inspiration is Most Desired Eugenia, one of the FR holy grails. The new incarnation looks better to me and I’m sure this will be a new grail doll.

A new character debuts as the convention doll - and if she looks a bit familiar it is because the sculpt is the original Avantguard one, redone digitally in 1/6 scale. The name is probably referring to the known fashion model Aymeline Valade, but this look is totally Diana Ross. Unlike the debut of Karolyn Stone, this one was received enthusiastically. After the end of the presentation, main package ticket holders were invited on a zoom virtual after party, to celebrate the end of Integrity Toys first virtual convention. It was overall a great success, very different from a real one of course, but people still had a good time and got great dolls. If the presentations were live, like webinars are, and not pre-recorded, it would have been even better. Maybe next time.

Shantommo for Integrity Toys - Ryan Liang's Such A Gem Dania Zarr available for W Club members

Late last year, Integrity Toys announced the winner of their 2019 International Integrity Toys Design Competition and now the W Club presents the production doll based on competition winner Ryan Liang's winning entry, named "Such A Gem" Dania Zarr™. According to the rules of the competition, the winning design, which was voted on by W Club members, went through various adjustments to make it production ready, while preserving the spirit of Ryan's original design, alongside the character choice that W Club members voted on. Now W Club members get to pre-order her and have the right to pre-order as many dolls as they like.

Ryan Liang is well known to most doll collectors as the person behind Shantommo, designing gorgeous clothes for dolls of both 1:6 and 1:4 scale. I love his style and designs and the quality of his work is exquisite. His award was much deserved and the resulting doll is gorgeous. Her colouring brings to mind a young Elisabeth Taylor. Her versatile dress is in haute couture territory - and this style of glamorous chic is creeping up again in the work of many young up and coming designers, inspired by 80s French Haute Couture. It must have been the fastest pre-order I’ve ever done!.

A few words about Ryan from the club email:

Born and currently living in Malaysia, when Ryan Liang first saw Integrity Toys’s FR line back in 2012, he was hooked and he immediately started collecting! As time passed, influenced and assisted by his mom (who is a tailor), Ryan learned how to sew and design garments. This eventually led to the creation of doll outfits and now, dolls act as his canvas of choice to express his visions and passion towards fashion!

Integrity Toys Dolly Days finale pt.2: Fashion Royalty Retrofuture 2019 Collection reveal

The second collection unveiled on Saturday was a three doll Fashion Royalty Collection designed again by Jessy Ayala. The collection is inspired by various things: Thierry Mugler’s robotic body armour outfits, Daphne Guinness, Dior, the artist Fecal Matter, Balenciaga, Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen. Lots of influences, combined in various ways, with an almost impeccable result. They fit great with the Anika Luxottica Dasha from the IFDC 2016 convention. If the dolls were more, I’d have a serious budget problem. And contrary to the NuFace collection before it, this one is justifying the prices attached to the dolls. Two of them are available through IT dealers (Vanessa and Adéle), one is the event doll, available only to W Club members for preorder (Dania). I love this collection so much, I got them all!

What an amazing Vanessa is this? The doll, using the 1.0 sculpt, immediately reminded me of AFL Vanessa. The Hungarian skintone is a first for this sculpt I think. It goes well with her make up as well as the colour of her outfit. And what an outfit! The dress is the one made and worn by the artist Fecal Matter, who in turn was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friends dress. Only now it is red and has grommets as decoration, which I remember seeing on old and newer Versace outfits. Remember that the bow is detachable. And with Marilyn and retrofuturism combined, you can’t not mention the work of Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, with his sexy robotic pin ups. The thunderbolt pumps are very Thierry Mugler, as are the metallic hands and arm bands. The sunglasses remind me of vintage Alain Mikli styles. Good thing that she has three pairs of hands: regular, holding and robotic. I added a slideshow below, to help you see the various influences.

A gorgeous Adéle is the second doll in this collection and is one of the best Adéle dolls ever released. Nubian skintone? Check. Beautiful make up? Check. Great hairstyle? Check. Amazing outfit? Check. Brilliant accessories? Check. She could be a Christian Dior modelfrom the John Galliano era, with that modernised Bar Suit silhouette. And, not that Jessy could have had an advanced look at the new Ivy Park collection that Beyoncé is dropping next January, but the jacket could easily have been part of it, from what I have seen in the photos of her in the January 2020 Elle magazine. The bag is the metallic version of the Dior Saddle bag that designer Kim Jones debuted on the Pre-Fall 2019 Men collection, in collaboration with - guess who? - Hajime Sorayama! Pity this bag is not metallic; its real life counterpart was and cost a breathtaking $35,000! There are only ten of them in the world, one being owned by KKW. Jones has been obsessed with Sorayama’s work for years and he had him do a special installation of his robotic woman statue for the show. The metallic hands are again Mugler. I made a slideshow with all the references, check it out below.

The pièce de résistance of this collection (and the whole week in general) is Mothership Dania Zarr. She is incredible. Inspired by the Alexander McQueen friend and muse, Daphne Guinness, the Mugler robotic bodysuits and a Balenciaga coat, the doll stands out from the rest. I love the Daphne Guiness inspiration, she is one of my favourite fashion people and I love the idea of having a doll inspired by her. She has been photographed wearing lots of incredible McQueen originals by the greatest photographers. Her trademark streaked hair are like the ones Dania is sporting. The outfit is based on the Mugler robotic outfits, taking elements from all of them - he has done quite a few, with the most famous being the one worn by model Emma Sjöberg both on Mugler’s catwalk and in the George Michael videoclip Too Funky (watch it below). And the bodice and arm covers are made of metal. The coat is inspired by Balenciaga (Jessy mentioned it in a video accompanying the email presentation). Cristobal Balenciaga had designed a short coat in this style, which Nicholas Ghesquière redid for the storied house into a dress, many years later. The belt is from the Christian Dior Resort 2019 Collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The boots are surprisingly not Mugler but Tom Ford Spring 2013. And the sunglasses are from Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton Fall 2012 RTW collection, bringing it full circle back to Daphne Guinness. A tour de force. If you’re not a W Club member, you will have to wait till next year to get it on the secondary market. The price is higher than the other two dolls but she fully justifies it. There’s the slideshow with the references below.

Integrity Toys 1st International Design Challenge - my entry!

Integrity Toys has been holding a Design Challenge contest for every convention they hold. This year, they decided to extend this for W Club members from all over the world and proclaimed their 1st International Design Challenge. As many other club members, I jumped at the chance of participating - putting my years of studying pattern making and fashion design at work. The brief was to pick a past doll from Integrity Toys and remake her as her opposite - i.e. if she had a day look, the entrants should remake her in its evening version and vice versa.

I decided to use the gorgeous Aperitif At The Balthazar fashion from Fashion Royalty 2004 Voyages collection. As it was a day outfit, I would make my fashion an evening look. And since it was only an outfit, I could pick any doll I wanted to remake. My pick was Dania Zarr Rare Appearance, a 2014 W Club doll. I named her Champagne At The Waldorf, referencing an iconic hotel of New York, with legendary balls held in it, much like Balthazar is an iconic French style brasserie of the city.

The sketch of my entry - Champagne At The Waldorf

The sketch of my entry - Champagne At The Waldorf

I made the design easily - the inspiration came quickly and I focused on making something that would be relatively easy to make commercially, as the winning entry gets to be made by Integrity Toys to sell. The evening look kept the two-piece part of the suit, turning the jacket into a vest with a shawl collar. The bottom part of the skirt and the collar were made from pink muslin, echoing the lining of the original suit, while the rest was the same pied de coq print as the original - finding the fabric was easier than I would have ever thought! I picked pink for the buttons as well.

Champagne At The Waldorf Dania Zarr contest enrty 1

As my sewing skills are negligent (I can sew a button but that's it), I turned to my friend Maria from Habilis Dolls for help and she recommended her friend Ursula, a very talented seamstress that has made some perfectly made doll fashions to sell; luckily agreed to sew my prototype. The final look was enhanced with a pair of rhinestone and pearl jewels fixed on the ends of the shawl collar.

Champagne At The Waldorf Dania Zarr contest entry 2

As for the doll, I restyled Dania's hair into an up-do, to match the evening look, and added feathers in her hair with a rhinstone and pearl brooch, as the original had a small fascinator with similar small feathers on it. You cannot see the shoes but I used some beautiful black pumps with ribbons at the ankles. The entry did not make the final round but I am happy I entered and would do it all over again! Let me know what you think of my design in the comments.

The 2016 Integrity Toys Convention: Supermodels part X: The final gala night

The final night of the Integrity Toys convention is always the most impressive, important but also emotional, as everyone has to say goodbye. The evening started with the introduction of the final centerpiece of the convention, followed by dinner, the announcement of this year's competition winners, the raffle of the designer OOAK dolls (which were amazing, pity I do not have official photos) and an interview with Jason Wu.
Jason announced plans for celebrating his company's 10th anniversary in 2017 and the introduction of new features in the Fashion Royalty line, starting with a "Velvet Touch" skin finish (sounds similar to Lovetones skin). He announced that as a thank you for everyone who opted to attend convention this year, a special offer would be included with the convention doll: to pre-order the very first Elyse doll that features the "Velvet Touch" skin finish. It seems like the Jason Wu anniversary dolls will be a separate line, sold through international stores, more expensive and with more detailed handmade outfits. More about the actual doll below.
I forgot to mention in a previous post that Victoire is also making a comeback, with a slightly tweaked body (it will be "explosive" like the FR for easier dressing). Cannot wait to see her back.
The moment everyone was waiting for was of course the reveal of this year's convention doll which came with two complete outfits to match the other girls in the convention collection.
Next year's convention will be in Orlando, Florida the weekend of October 19th-21st, 2017 with the theme of Fashion Fairytale. The amazing fairytale inspired editorials of Grace Coddington for the Christmas issues of Vogue came to mind immediately.
The winner of 2016's Supermodel Convention Design Competition Advanced Category was the talented Salvador Lopez Arriaga, so congratulations for him! He got both jury and public awards. His design will come to life later in 2017 as a real Integrity Toys doll. Here's a picture of his lovely creation:

At the intermediary category, public prize went to the amazing Ginny Liezert, while last year's winner, the awesome Jason Kramer got the jury prize. Congratulations both, much deserved!

This is a suit from the Dior by John Galliano Haute Couture collection from Autumn/Winter 1997/1998, an iconic collection and show. It was worn on the runway, in the parc des Bagatelles, by Debra Shaw, a model and friend of Galliano's.

A simliar look was also shown but with higher shoulders.

..and the only editorial photo of it I could find was this:

Princesse Bundi and Princesse Partabgarh from the Haute Couture F/W 1997 Collection.

Dania looks gorgeous here, and the recreation of the suit is perfection. Love the amazing Masai necklace. The inspiration of that collection was Marchesa Casati and Masai tribal dress.

Pity the shoes are not the fringed ones shown with the actual outfit, they'd be smashing. I do think though that Jordan or Nadja would rock this one much better, just like Debra Shaw did on the catwalk.

Lacroix sweetie, Lacroix! Finally a gown from the master of couture, and a sumptuous one at that. This is from the Christian Lacroix Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1995 collection and this is how it looked on the runway:

Shalom Harlow is the supermodel that wore it best in an editorial for US Vogue that year:

Dasha, still with her trademark sideglance, looks fab here. She does remind me a bit of Karen Mulder and also of her previous incarnation as Renegade, again blonde and in a red dress.

I love the recreation and the detachable train. The jewellery is amazing too. And she has the extra Versace dress too!

Elyse was not at convention but she made quite an impression. The face looks a lot like Montaine Market Elise, the dress is lovely, with nice detailing. But the stud earrings and the absence of other accessories do not justify the high price (near $200 from what I hear) of the doll. She is too austere, almost looks like a nanny in a fancy dress.
