Shantommo for Integrity Toys - Ryan Liang's Such A Gem Dania Zarr available for W Club members

Late last year, Integrity Toys announced the winner of their 2019 International Integrity Toys Design Competition and now the W Club presents the production doll based on competition winner Ryan Liang's winning entry, named "Such A Gem" Dania Zarr™. According to the rules of the competition, the winning design, which was voted on by W Club members, went through various adjustments to make it production ready, while preserving the spirit of Ryan's original design, alongside the character choice that W Club members voted on. Now W Club members get to pre-order her and have the right to pre-order as many dolls as they like.

Ryan Liang is well known to most doll collectors as the person behind Shantommo, designing gorgeous clothes for dolls of both 1:6 and 1:4 scale. I love his style and designs and the quality of his work is exquisite. His award was much deserved and the resulting doll is gorgeous. Her colouring brings to mind a young Elisabeth Taylor. Her versatile dress is in haute couture territory - and this style of glamorous chic is creeping up again in the work of many young up and coming designers, inspired by 80s French Haute Couture. It must have been the fastest pre-order I’ve ever done!.

A few words about Ryan from the club email:

Born and currently living in Malaysia, when Ryan Liang first saw Integrity Toys’s FR line back in 2012, he was hooked and he immediately started collecting! As time passed, influenced and assisted by his mom (who is a tailor), Ryan learned how to sew and design garments. This eventually led to the creation of doll outfits and now, dolls act as his canvas of choice to express his visions and passion towards fashion!

Integrity Toys Dolly Days finale pt.2: Fashion Royalty Retrofuture 2019 Collection reveal

The second collection unveiled on Saturday was a three doll Fashion Royalty Collection designed again by Jessy Ayala. The collection is inspired by various things: Thierry Mugler’s robotic body armour outfits, Daphne Guinness, Dior, the artist Fecal Matter, Balenciaga, Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen. Lots of influences, combined in various ways, with an almost impeccable result. They fit great with the Anika Luxottica Dasha from the IFDC 2016 convention. If the dolls were more, I’d have a serious budget problem. And contrary to the NuFace collection before it, this one is justifying the prices attached to the dolls. Two of them are available through IT dealers (Vanessa and Adéle), one is the event doll, available only to W Club members for preorder (Dania). I love this collection so much, I got them all!

What an amazing Vanessa is this? The doll, using the 1.0 sculpt, immediately reminded me of AFL Vanessa. The Hungarian skintone is a first for this sculpt I think. It goes well with her make up as well as the colour of her outfit. And what an outfit! The dress is the one made and worn by the artist Fecal Matter, who in turn was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friends dress. Only now it is red and has grommets as decoration, which I remember seeing on old and newer Versace outfits. Remember that the bow is detachable. And with Marilyn and retrofuturism combined, you can’t not mention the work of Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama, with his sexy robotic pin ups. The thunderbolt pumps are very Thierry Mugler, as are the metallic hands and arm bands. The sunglasses remind me of vintage Alain Mikli styles. Good thing that she has three pairs of hands: regular, holding and robotic. I added a slideshow below, to help you see the various influences.

A gorgeous Adéle is the second doll in this collection and is one of the best Adéle dolls ever released. Nubian skintone? Check. Beautiful make up? Check. Great hairstyle? Check. Amazing outfit? Check. Brilliant accessories? Check. She could be a Christian Dior modelfrom the John Galliano era, with that modernised Bar Suit silhouette. And, not that Jessy could have had an advanced look at the new Ivy Park collection that Beyoncé is dropping next January, but the jacket could easily have been part of it, from what I have seen in the photos of her in the January 2020 Elle magazine. The bag is the metallic version of the Dior Saddle bag that designer Kim Jones debuted on the Pre-Fall 2019 Men collection, in collaboration with - guess who? - Hajime Sorayama! Pity this bag is not metallic; its real life counterpart was and cost a breathtaking $35,000! There are only ten of them in the world, one being owned by KKW. Jones has been obsessed with Sorayama’s work for years and he had him do a special installation of his robotic woman statue for the show. The metallic hands are again Mugler. I made a slideshow with all the references, check it out below.

The pièce de résistance of this collection (and the whole week in general) is Mothership Dania Zarr. She is incredible. Inspired by the Alexander McQueen friend and muse, Daphne Guinness, the Mugler robotic bodysuits and a Balenciaga coat, the doll stands out from the rest. I love the Daphne Guiness inspiration, she is one of my favourite fashion people and I love the idea of having a doll inspired by her. She has been photographed wearing lots of incredible McQueen originals by the greatest photographers. Her trademark streaked hair are like the ones Dania is sporting. The outfit is based on the Mugler robotic outfits, taking elements from all of them - he has done quite a few, with the most famous being the one worn by model Emma Sjöberg both on Mugler’s catwalk and in the George Michael videoclip Too Funky (watch it below). And the bodice and arm covers are made of metal. The coat is inspired by Balenciaga (Jessy mentioned it in a video accompanying the email presentation). Cristobal Balenciaga had designed a short coat in this style, which Nicholas Ghesquière redid for the storied house into a dress, many years later. The belt is from the Christian Dior Resort 2019 Collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. The boots are surprisingly not Mugler but Tom Ford Spring 2013. And the sunglasses are from Alexander McQueen by Sarah Burton Fall 2012 RTW collection, bringing it full circle back to Daphne Guinness. A tour de force. If you’re not a W Club member, you will have to wait till next year to get it on the secondary market. The price is higher than the other two dolls but she fully justifies it. There’s the slideshow with the references below.

Integrity Toys Dolly Days finale pt.1: NuFace 2019 Collection reveal

While the fifth Dolly Day went by without any offer from Integrity Toys - just a teaser email about Saturday’s reveal, the sixth and last day of the online event made up for it in spades. While the two collections offered by the company and designed by Jessy Ayala are small in number (three dolls per each), they were enthusiastically received by collectors and are probably going to be quite popular. In this post, we will check out the NuFace ladies and their days off concept: the dolls are dressed in clothes that they would wear in their everyday life, each in her own unique style. They are great looking dolls, but for their $150.00 price, I wanted more elaborate outfits and styles. All three are available from Integrity Toys dealers.

Ayumi is beautiful, looking fresh but very basic, with her plain hair and outfit. She looks like she was part of the lottery NuFace Essentials capsule collection revealed last May. If I did not have Power House Ayumi, I might have considered getting her. She’s ideal for those that don’t have any Ayumi yet. But still expensive for what you get.

Jessy revised the new Colette sculpt by shrinking the (admittedly oversized) head a bit, and it shows. She looks much better than her debut incarnation back in the Supermodel Convention. If she had a different hair colour, I might have considered buying her, as I do not own any Colette yet. Her green eyes are mesmerising.

IMG_2126.jpeg
IMG_2127.jpeg

Her coat dress is a shorter version of a Balmain Fall 2019 RTW coat. On the runway, it was worn with opaque tights, which fit the off duty concept much better, and over something resembling a blouse/shirt/short dress leather thing, which would have made this doll so much better (along with the original length of the outfit) and worth the $150.00 price tag. Just imagine it made with that soft fake leather stretchy material used for doll gloves. The exact outfit shown on the runway is nowhere to be found either on the brand’s website or major online retailers, so it might have been runway only.

This lady looks like she jumped out of the Top Gun cast. Pity they did not give her aviator sunglasses to match the jumpsuit. She matches the convention Fresh Perspective Agnes in her colouring. I was tempted but her hairstyle is so wrong for this outfit and NuFace in general. Which is a complaint for this collection in general: apart from Colette’s colours, the rest feels a bit tame for such a line. Maybe they should have carried on with the basic/underwear theme and given us lower priced dolls.

A W Club exclusive or a 2019 convention leftover?

A few days ago, WClub members received an email offering them the chance to participate in a lottery for a surprise doll: a Jason Wu Elyse. It is a recreation of a Fall 2017 Jason Wu outfit, which you can see further below. The small edition and the designer outfit definitely makes the doll wanted by collectors. There are some issues though, on which I will further elaborate.

In a year where production issues have plagued the company and the release of all their main doll collections, which forced the company to focus on delivering most of their product at the convention, a surprise doll offering and of such high caliber, means probably that the doll was destined for the convention. The edition number surely is that of a regular souvenir doll or a centerpiece. A wild guess (and all this is guessing only), is that she was designed and made as the souvenir doll for 2019 convention, but as the brouhaha with the added participants unfolded, they realised that they could not make more of the same to satisfy demand, so they switched to the Spring 2017 Elyse (a 700 edition). Similarly, she could have been the centerpiece to match the souvenir doll (Spring and Fall 2017 dolls), instead of the offered Vanessa one (a 550 edition). Again, this is only speculation.

IMG_1455.png

What bothers me about this doll a lot is the quality of the dress recreation. No matter the Swarovski crystals or the beautifully rendered doll, the dress looks a mess. Stiff, with crude embellishments, it looks nothing like the dress it is supposed to be. And if it was so hard to recreate the original in doll form, like so many others have been done exquisitely in the past, just pick another one. For the asking price alone, this should have been resolved before manufacturing it.

Integrity Toys 2019 Convention Day 3 - Jason Wu Gala and convention doll

The last evening of the Live From The Fashion Week convention was dedicated to the Jason Wu Gala. Guests entered the ballroom and saw the evening's centerpiece doll, Ethereal Beauty Vanessa Perrin, adorning the tables. Jason Wu himself was attending, as the convention doll would be designed by him. The winners of the convention design competition were also announced:

Diorama Design Competition:

People's Choice: Lani Billitti

Judge's Choice: Kelly Rinaldi

Doll Design Challenge:

People's Choice: Sinuhe Guzman

Judge's Choice: Osvaldo Vasquez (aka "Ovaz")

The winners of the OOAK dolls designed by the IT team just for the raffle room were picked and the host city of next year's convention was unveiled: the 2020 event will be held at Dallas, Texas, celebrating 25 years of Integrity Toys.

Special guest Jason Wu joined the hosts on stage to unveil the convention doll, the Elyse Jolie doll which he designed himself.

Note: All dolls pictured in these photos are prototypes; final colors and textures may vary slightly.

The original Vanessa sculpt makes an appearance as a centerpiece, wearing the same dress as Le Flor Natalia, in another colour. Dear IT designers, it kind of defeats the purpose of having the one of a kind doll’s wearing the same clothes as other dolls, no? The doll is beautiful, even though the orange tones in her make up are a bit off putting. She’s like a mix of Night Warrior and In Bloom Vanessas.

I’m not in awe of this year’s convention doll. I can pick at least ten Jason Wu gowns that look better than this in miniature size. The original effect of appliqué flowers does not translate well in this scale. Her make up is impressive but limits her redress options. The hairstyle is simply boring. You can see the original outfit from the Spring 2017 Jason Wu Collection runway further below.
